As part of my coursework in creative digital media at NWSLC, I delved deeply into LGBTQ+ mental health issues, which inspired me to organise a charity event at college. After researching various organisations, I decided to focus my campaign on MindOut UK, a charity that provides crucial support to LGBTQ+ individuals struggling with mental health challenges.
MindOut UK is a dedicated mental health service specifically for lesbians, gay men, bisexual, trans, and queer people. Despite its vital role, it’s not as widely recognised as some other charities, so I aimed to shed light on its essential work. MindOut is committed to improving the mental health and well-being of LGBTQ+ communities and raising awareness about mental health concerns within these groups.
In my presentation, I highlighted several key aspects of MindOut’s work:

Comprehensive Support: Last year, MindOut assisted 1,342 individuals facing issues such as social isolation, suicidal distress, financial difficulties, discrimination, and hate crime.
Community-Based Approach: The charity is run entirely by members of the LGBTQ+ community, all of whom have lived experiences with mental health issues or have cared for someone with mental health needs.
Commitment to Equality: MindOut actively challenges inequality and discrimination, offering support to people from diverse backgrounds, including those from Black, Asian, and minority ethnic communities, individuals with disabilities, and those from various religious and cultural backgrounds.
My decision to focus on MindOut was driven by its vital work and the need to increase its visibility. The charity’s approach to addressing mental health within the LGBTQ+ community is compassionate and practical, making it an excellent candidate for support.

I decided to raise money for the charity by hosting a game where students try to guess the name of a teddy bear. I decided to buy a small bear from a charity shop rather than purchasing a brand-new bear, which also adheres to the idea of fundraising for charity. Therefore, I created a simple poster for the event and printed several on tables around the college, bulletin boards, and places around the student hub. The event brought together students, faculty, and local supporters to champion this vital cause, highlighting the crucial role MindOut plays in supporting LGBTQ+ mental health. This event helped raise awareness of this charity for the members of the LGBTQ+ Society and other students.
Through this project, I’ve learned the power of advocacy and community engagement in promoting causes that matter. By spotlighting MindOut, I hope to contribute to its mission of improving mental health and well-being for LGBTQ+ individuals and fostering a more inclusive and supportive environment.
After conducting thorough research for my poster design, I carefully planned both the design and the message I wanted to convey. The final result turned out to be far more impactful than I initially anticipated. While my original concept was solid, it was clear that the final piece conveyed a much stronger intensity and emotional resonance, enhancing the campaign's overall effectiveness.
